Statement to Indonesia THE DAY OF BROKEN PROMISES
14th August 2009
Dear Ambassador,
Mr Yuri O Thamrin
Tomorrow, the 15th August 2009 marks the 47th anniversary of the New York Agreement between Indonesia and the Kingdom of the Netherlands – 47 years since Indonesia promised to allow us West Papuans to exercise our right to self-determination. A promise you broke in the so-called Act of Free choice - a cruel name for the betrayal of a nation.
In the New York Agreement you promised to allow us to express our will freely. You promised to allow all adult males and females to decide our future in accordance with international practice. But you betrayed us in the so-called Act of Free Choice 1969. You took 1022 of our elders and our leaders and you forced them at gunpoint to declare for Indonesia. You said that was the unanimous decision of the entire country.
You broke your promise to us. You broke your promise to the Dutch. You broke your promise to the United Nations.
You had a sacred trust under the UN Charter to bring us to self-government and freedom. You violated that trust in the so-called Act of Free Choice.
For decades the West Papuan peoples have suffered under Indonesian rule. You torture us. You rape and kill us. You rape our land which is a mother to us. You are killing our mother and you are killing us.
Today we ask you to look at your actions and correct the terrible wrong you have done to us.
Today we ask you to leave our country.
Today we ask you to allow the United Nations to hold a genuine act of self-determination for all adult indigenous West Papuans.
And we ask you to leave us alone and let us live peacefully with our mother the land as we have done for thousands of years
