West Papuan protests voice discontent with Indonesian rule

Thousands of West Papuans rallied in the local capital Jayapura on July 7 to demand the provincial legislature reject the region’s special autonomy status within Indonesia and call for a referendum on self-determination. An upper house of tribal leaders, the Papuan People’s Assembly (MRP), voted in June to reject Papua’s autonomy status, which was introduced in 2001.

The military commander of the Cenderawasih Military Command,
Major-General Hotma Marbun, said that the aspirations of some groups of
people to secede from the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia -
NKRI - will never be achieved as long as the Indonesian army remains in
Papua.

First part :
On Friday, 9 July 2010 TNI/Polri forces shot dead a TPN/OPM member sent from the Tingginambut headquarters in Kampung Jambi. NUMBUNGGA GIRE died at the hands of the Indonesian security apparatus and was then cremated by OPM members and villagers in Kampung Jambi. No picture could be attached to this report since the access from Kota Mulia to the place was blocked by military forces. Source: Witness from Kampung Jambi (D. GAME).

Security forces urged not to be selective in applying subversive law

In the wake of a statement made yesterday by Wachyono, the head of public relations of the police force in Papua, to the effect that people demanding that a referendum be held, which was one of the recommendations of the MRP, need not be charged under the subversion - 'makar' - law, Buchtar Tabuni, the chairman of the National Committee of West Papua- KNPB - said that this statement had puzzled him. He saw this as an act of discrimination by the police towards himself and his colleagues.
