Ferdinand Pakage's family demand action regarding loss of sight in one eye

The damage inflicted on the sight of the prisoner, Ferdinand Pakage as the result of a beating he sustained some time ago from a prison warder was raised in a press conference in Japayura.

Speaking at the press conference in Waena was Domingus Agapa, the mother of the prisoner, who insisted that, according to the family, Ferdinand had not committed any crime warranting a fifteen-year sentence as passed
by the district court in Jayapura.

'In fact, it was only after the shooting that my son arrived at the place and was arrested by the police,' she said.

Selpius Bobii who also attended the press conference which was convened by Solidarity for Victims of Human Rights Abuses, said that Ferdinand was being held in prison by the state and he had been mistreated by a state official. 'The state should therefore take responsibility. His family are making their claim in accordance with traditional law and
national law. This means a life for a life or an eye for an eye. It is up to the state to give the victim a new eye, while his nervous system should also be examined. Anything that happens to him during his incarceration is the responsibility of the state,' he said.

He also said that the official who had struck him in the eye causing him to loss of the sight of that eye has not been called to account. 'He is still working at the prison. We demand that he should be dismissed.'

A representative of the solidarity organisation told the press that they would organise a fund-raising event, like the fund-raising they had organised for his colleague, Filep Karma, if the government fails to respond to the family's demand..
