Sokrates to be forced to appear

The refusal of Duma Sokrates Yoman to respond to a summons from the police to give clarifications about a statement concerning the security forces and shootings in Puncak Jaya has led to the police saying they will use force to force the chairman of the United Baptist Churches in
Papua to appear.

The director for criminal affairs Petrus Waine said that Sokrates Yoman had created the impression in his speech that the TNI/Polri were responsible for the shootings. He must take responsibility for his remarks, including those about the shooting of civilians and members of
the security forces. 'He needs to produce data and facts and if he fails to do so, it is not ethical.' Waine would not say when they would take further action against Sokrates.

Gustaf Kawer, a lawyer who closely follows legal affairs in Papua, said he thought the police officer had reacted too hastily to the remarks of Sokrates. He said that the police should be ready to accept criticisms and regard them as a sign of confidence in the police force. 'They shouldn't be allergic towards Sokrates who is deeply concerned about his own people. We all know that these shootings in Puncak Jaya have been going on for a long time, that there are many troops stationed there, and many questions have been raised.'

The lawyer also said that, bearing in mind that Sokrates had originally raised his concerns in the press, the police should have made use of the same medium rather than issuing a summon.

'Yoman has not committed a criminal offence, and there's no need for a police summons. Criticisms from the people are quite natural in this era of democracy and should not be seen as violations of the law,' he said.

The lawyer also said that it was within the rights of Sokrates to refuse to respond to a police summons.
