Dear Mr Ambassador,



As leader of the West Papuan independence movement in the United Kingdom, I carry the voice of my people to you, on this sacred day for all West Papuans, 1st December, which is our Independence Day.


As you know, every day more and more people here in the UK and in many other countries are now learning about the injustice we have suffered when Indonesia tried to steal our right to self-determination from us in the illegal “Act of Free Choice” of 1969. Members of Parliament and so many ordinary British people are speaking out about West Papua and demanding that we can determine our own future, freely and democratically, once and for all.

Your government is always claiming to the world that Indonesia is now a democracy and respects human rights and the rule of law. Now is the time for Indonesia to admit and tell the world that your presence in West Papua is illegal.

Indonesia legally and morally does not have the right to occupy or rule our country because your attempt to tell the world that we West Papuans had “freely chosen to join Indonesia” in 1969 was a lie. We didn’t want to be Indonesian in 1969 and after 40 more years of killing, rape and torture, West Papuans certainly do not want to be part of Indonesia now in 2008.

On behalf of the indigenous people of West Papua, we demand that the government of Indonesia makes arrangements for the free exercise of our inalienable right to self determination, which was violated in the 1969 “Act of Free Choice, so that we can decide democratically our own future in accordance with international standards of human rights, the principles of international law and the Charter of the United Nations.
