Green Man stage Thames Festival- West Papuan contribution

Press Release: The Green Man Stage, Thames Festival

Date: Saturday 13 & Sunday 14 September
Time: 12pm -9.30pm both days

The Green Man Stage at the Thames Festival aims to raise environmental and social awareness through an extravaganza of world music, art exhibitions, stalls, kids spaces and guest speakers.
The two day free event includes:
• World music from all the corners of the globe including:
Jamiroquai’s Sola Akingbola, West Papuan, Maori, Australian Aboriginal, Algerian, Ethiopian, Ghanaian, and Indian performances, as well as UK premiere of Mongolian folk sensation Hanggai (see full line up and programme in notes)
• Powered entirely by renewable energy
• Indigenous art and photography exhibitions
• Inspirational speakers including author Jay Griffiths, Sam Roddick, Sinem Saban, and indigenous tribal leaders
• Global village with social and environmental stalls including Greenpeace and Survival
• World procession by local schools accompanied by world musicians
• Great for the whole family with kids space
• A chance to listen and dance to unique world music by the river
• Theme this year is cultural diversity, and its importance for the future of our world


Editor’s notes

1. The Mayor’s Thames Festival is a free celebration of multicultural London and its river. Close to a million people attend every year. The ‘Thames Festival’ is a UK charity, and its main funders in 2008 are the Mayor of London and the Arts Council and its principal sponsor is Barclays. Additional fundraising has also been carried out.
2. Potters Field is a riverside green space between Tower Bridge, City Hall and Tooley Street.

12 - 12.45pm Meta Meta (Afro-Cuban fusion jazz)
1 - 1.30pm Ant Hatcher & Anouki Coates (traditional Native American dance)
1.45 - 2.30pm Lani Singers with West Papuan tribal leader Benny Wenda,
introduced by Jay Griffiths
2.45 - 3.30pm Maori cultural performance, led by Maori tribal chief George Tamihana Nuku
3.30 - 4.15pm Aboriginal cultural performance, with Aboriginal rights campaigner Sinem Saban
4.30 - 5pm Genna Ethiopian Arts and Theatre with traditional song and dance
5.30 - 6.30pm Fantazia and their funky grooves from North Africa, introduced by Fazlun Khalid
7 - 7.45pm Seize The Day (bold and beautiful British folk music)
8.15 - 9.30pm ZubopGambia featuring Molara (Worldbeat sensation), introduced by Sam Roddick


Sunday 14th September

12 - 12.30pm Kakatsitsi Master Drummers from Ghana
12.45 - 1.30pm Sisobia Arts and their celebration of Gujarati folk music
1.30 - 2.15pm Alastair McIntosh, speaking on humanity and climate change
2.30 - 3.45pm Hanggai, with enchanting folk music from the Mongolian grasslands, ended by Martin Palmer
4.15 - 5pm Love Grocer (positive sunshine reggae and dub)
5 – 5.45pm World Cultures procession
5.45 – 7pm Jamiroquai's Sola Akingbola with Critical Mass (funky African roots), introduced by Kenyan environmentalist Ng'ang'a Thiong'o
7.30 - 8.30pm European Cultures DJ set, with Garth Cartwright
8.30 - 9.30pm Circo Abusivo (wild Balkan gypsy music
