{"id":335,"date":"2011-11-27T09:54:02","date_gmt":"2011-11-27T09:54:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/infopapua.net\/?p=335"},"modified":"2015-05-04T09:59:05","modified_gmt":"2015-05-04T09:59:05","slug":"international-lawyers-for-west-papua","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.infopapua.org\/?p=335","title":{"rendered":"International Lawyers for West Papua"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"container\" class=\"clear\">\n<div id=\"content\">\n<div class=\"entry\">\n<div id=\"post_21\" class=\"single clear post-21 page type-page status-publish hentry\">\n<div class=\"post-content\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bennywenda.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/ILWP-launch_Guyana.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-271\" title=\"ILWP-launch_Guyana\" src=\"http:\/\/bennywenda.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/ILWP-launch_Guyana.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"397\" height=\"258\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On 5th April 2009, the anniversary of the Day of Hope 1961, which commemorates the New Guinea Parliament in 1961, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilwp.org\">International Lawyers for West Papua<\/a> (ILWP) was launched.<\/p>\n<div>The ILWP\u2019s mission is to help the indigenous peoples of West Papua to exercise their right to self-determination under international law. ILWP was launched in Guyana, South America.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Speaking, from Georgetown, Melinda Janki, co-founder of ILWP, said the ILWP could have been launched anywhere in the world but that Guyana was selected because \u201c<em>40 years ago, Guyana was one of a tiny number of countries that voted in support of West Papua\u2019s freedom and its right to self-determination<\/em>. <em>West Papuans have since been denied their fundamental right to choose freedom from colonial rule. Today, West Papua is still a colony. The annexation by Indonesia was a terrible violation of West Papua\u2019s right to self-determination. ILWP is working to redress that wrong<\/em>.\u201d<\/div>\n<p lang=\"en-GB\">Also present at the launch was Colin Andrews, Chair of the National Toshaos Council and head of all indigenous peoples in Guyana. He pledged support for ILWP in it\u2019s work to help bring about self-determination for the people of West Papua.<\/p>\n<div>Following the launch Benny Wenda was invited to visit Amerindian communities and share his experiences with them. Throughout his visit Amerindian leaders and their communities raised the Morning Star flag in solidarity with their indigenous brothers and sisters in West Papua and pledged their support for their struggle.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h2>Statement of Legal Principles on West Papua<\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><em>We the undersigned recognise and confirm that the indigenous peoples of West Papua have a fundamental right to self-determination under international law.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>We are committed to assisting the indigenous peoples of West Papua to exercise freely and peacefully their right to self-determination.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>We are also committed to upholding, strengthening and preserving the fundamental rights and freedoms of the indigenous peoples of West Papua under international law.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>We call upon the international community of States and the United Nations to uphold the international rule of law.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>We request indigenous peoples across the world to help the indigenous Papuan peoples to exercise peacefully their human rights.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bennywenda.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/ILWP_support1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-270 \" title=\"ILWP_support\" src=\"http:\/\/bennywenda.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/ILWP_support1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"370\" height=\"284\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Support within West Papua<\/h2>\n<p>In West Papua, and throughout Indonesia, thousands of Papuans took to the streets to support the launch of ILWP .<\/p>\n<p>In the West Papua state capital of Jayapura, peaceful demonstrations were met with a violent response from the Indonesian security forces.<\/p>\n<p>Two West Papuans were killed, and dozens of others were arrested and tortured by the Indonesian police and military.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>ILWP \u2013 Papua New Guinea launch<\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-214\" title=\"International-Lawyers-West-Papua_PNG_Chapter\" src=\"http:\/\/bennywenda.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/International-Lawyers-West-Papua_PNG_Chapter.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"497\" height=\"336\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Launch of ILWP in Papua New Guinea, February 2011<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p>In February 2011, Benny travelled to the capital of Papua New Guinea for a launch event of ILWP.<\/p>\n<p>During his visit, Benny also helped coordinate the ongoing legal investigation being carried out into the Sunset Merona raids on West Papuan refugee settlements. These raids had seen hundreds of Papuan refugees forcibly resettled from their homes near the border of West Papua and Papua New Guinea.<\/p>\n<h2>ILWP \u2013 UK launch<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bennywenda.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/ILWP-London_launch.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-215\" title=\"ILWP-London_launch\" src=\"http:\/\/bennywenda.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/ILWP-London_launch.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"418\" height=\"234\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p>In October 2011, human rights lawyer and ILWP co-founder, Jennifer Robinson, hosted the UK launch of ILWP at the Finer Stephen\u2019s Innocent Chambers in London.<\/p>\n<p>Speakers at the launch event included the highly respected QCs Jeffrey Robertson and Mark Stephens, who both outlined the legal right of the people of West Papua to self-determination.
