Dear Friend of West Papua

In this update we bring you news including:

* Urgent appeal to International Community on Freeport Killings
* 'Act of Free Choice' 40th Anniversary - actions
* International Parliamentarians for West Papua update
* Benny Wenda interview on BBC World News
* Lani Singers update FREEPORT APPEAL

The recent wave of killings at the Freeport Mine, and the resulting
cover-up from the Indonesian authorities over the culprits is yet
another example of the grave injustices that have engulfed West Papua
over the past 40 years. Whilst all the evidence points to the recent
shootings (that left several dead including one Australian mining
worker) being the work of Indonesian army operatives (the bullets used
in the attacks were army issued), the Indonesian authorities have
ignored this and instead used the shootings as as an excuse to launch a
further crackdown on the indigneous population.

One has to start wondering whether the shootings were planned as a means
of providing an excuse for further military deployment in the region. In
the last few days over 1000 Indonesian troops have been dropped in
Timika, and a further 1000 in Mulia, with raids being carried out on
villages in these region, leading to hundreds of people fleeing into the
jungle in fear of their lives.

Independent observers must be sent by the United Nations to investigate
these killings, and we are once again calling for a UN peacekeeping
force to be sent to the region. This would have the overwhelming support
of the Papuan people who have suffered for too long.

We should not forget that it was only 10 years since the horrors of East
Timor filled our screens. Indonesia is committing the same horrors in
West Papua now, away from the cameras.

ACT OF FREE CHOICE

The 40th anniversary of the Act of Free Choice falls next month. 40
years of injustice, brutality, rape, murder, intimidation, torture,
beatings,genocide.

We are asking everyone around the world to help drive awareness of this
anniversary in the coming weeks to highlight the terrible injustices
that have befallen the Papuan people since the Indonesian occupation.

Contact your newspapers, local and national news. Tell them of the great
injustice happening in West Papua. Tell them how people in West Papua
are put in prison for 15 years if they dare to raise a flag. Tell them
that in West Papua there is no democracy, or freedom of speech.

We will be holding a day of action in London, starting at the Dutch
Embassy and finishing at the Indonesian Embassy. Please come and join us
on Friday 14th August from 1pm.

INTERNATIONAL PARLIAMENTARIANS FOR WEST PAPUA

The IPWP continues to grow in membership as more and more politicans
sign up to give their support for a re-run of the "Act of Free Choice',
and we are delighted that Caroline Lucas has agreed to host a launch in
the European Parliament this Autumn. Full details including a date will
be announced soon.

Please continue to lobby your local Parliamentarian to sign the
declaration. They can do so at the IPWP website at www.ipwp.org

BENNY WENDA ON BBC NEWS

Exiled West Papua Independence leader Benny Wenda will be special guest
on BBC World News on Friday 31st July, at 1245pm (GMT). He will be
talking about the situation in West Papua, and will also play some
traditional Papuan music with his wife Maria.

Wherever you are in the world, please tune in and watch this. It will be
on the BBC News channel and is shown live worldwide.

THE LANI SINGERS

As mentioned above, Benny and Maria Wenda play traditional music as the
Lani Singers. Please visit their website or purchase a copy of their
critically acclaimed album 'Ninalik Ndawi' (Freedom Song).
