Here we send you a report of West Papuan People’s demonstration led by the Papua Customary Council on the 17th of September 2008.

On Wednesday, 17th of September 2008, there was a big demonstration by the People of West Papua. This demonstration was led by leaders of Papua Customary Council, Mr Forkorus Yaboisembut (Chairman), Fadhal Alhamid (vice chairman), and Leo Imbir (Secretary). Leader of Baliem Customary Council, Mr Lemok Mabel, Coordinator of General Coalition, Mr Buchtar Tabuni, General Secretary of West Papua Central Highland Students Association, and all West Papuan independence activists, West Papuan students from Java and Bali and ex-political prisoners were among the leaders that led the demonstration.

This was the biggest demo with estimated number of people involved around 3000 people who marched and filled the streets from Jayapura – Abepura – Sentani.

Chronolgy of the demo:

A big crowd of people gathered at several places such as in Expo Waena, Abepura Round About, and in Imbi Park, Jayapura Town. The people from Sentani joined the crowd in Expo Waena and marched to Abepura Round About and then continued marching to Jayapura. The people were so enthusiastic during the march. They were singing West Papuan freedom songs and customary tribal songs from each region of Papua.

The West Papuan Task Force worked hard to ensure that the demonstration was peaceful and organized. The aspiration from the West Papuan People signed by the Papua Customary Council is attached.

Below are some pictures we took during the demonstration:

Mobile brigade came with weapon and police rubber stick. Their appearance as usual was part of intimidation and terror in any native West Papuan demonstration.
